Welcome!
A new school year is beginning! I would like to take this opportunity to welcome all new and returning students and families to Grade Two/Three. I hope that everyone had a happy, fun-filled summer.
The second and third grade programs seek to enable the students to become independent thinkers while building and expanding on basic skills acquired in previous grades. Personal growth in resourcefulness, self-motivation and perseverance are over arching goals of the year. Students will gain confidence in problem-solving in all areas. They will learn to express their ideas clearly in writing and discourse and they will continue to practice kindness, responsibility and accountability in the social arena. Through partner and group work, students will learn to appreciate differences and practice cooperation and compromise.
The reading program will include many selections that are sure to inspire and delight. Students will learn to further develop comprehension skills to answer questions based on presented material. Writing, spelling and phonetic awareness are integral parts of the language arts program as well. Second and third graders will write creative stories, poems, descriptions and factual reports. Emphasis will be placed on spelling, punctuation, and handwriting as well as developing clear, descriptive writing. Their writing will progress through the following stages: brainstorming and planning, rough draft, conferencing with the teacher, revising, editing and the completion of a final copy with coordinating pictures. In Math and Science class, an understanding of concepts will be developed through the use of manipulatives, corresponding sheets and lessons and a variety of hands-on activities.
The opportunities made available to children early in their academic careers help to build the necessary foundation for their future attitudes and educational successes. I believe that all children can reach their full potential as they follow their educational path if they are given the confidence and the essential tools and guidance to excel. It is my hope that, as I impart the knowledge needed, that I will also manage to inspire and motivate my students to strive for more by showing them that they can also have FUN in their search.
I am looking forward to working with your child and playing a significant influence in their personal growth and development and watching them thrive. I know we’re going to have a GREAT year of learning together!
